TanTan is the app people mean when they say the Chinese Tinder, and I used it across China, Hong Kong, Macau and Japan. It works well enough to justify the install, but the ratio of scams to real people is worse than anything else I’ve used in the region, and the version your app store hands you now may not even be the product I started on. It sits inside the wider dating in Asia picture with traps that belong to it alone.
There Are Two Apps Called TanTan Now
Searching for TanTan today turns up two different products from two different companies. The listing that currently ranks at the top of the US app stores calls itself a global dating app, and its own website credits Hello Planet Pte. Ltd., a Singapore entity, while openly describing itself as the new international version sitting alongside the existing Chinese one. The original app, the one this post is about, traces back to Beijing through Tantan Cultural Development Beijing Limited, and older Android listings for it still name Tantan Hong Kong Limited as the publisher.
That split has a practical cost. Install whatever the store puts on top and you can land on a product with a different user base, different pricing and a different idea of what it’s for, which quietly makes every guide you just read worthless. Check the developer name on the listing before you download rather than after you’ve spent an evening filling out a profile.
Getting In Takes a Phone Number and a Wait
Registration wants a mobile number or a Facebook account and won’t let you browse until you hand one of those over. The slower gate is photo verification, which is optional and earns you a badge, and published reviews put that wait at more than twenty four hours, which matches my memory of it taking longer than felt reasonable. The badge turned out to be worth having for a reason I didn’t expect, because it’s also the filter I ended up applying to everybody else.
There’s no identity document anywhere in that process, no residence card and no passport, which makes TanTan far easier to join than something like Pairs in Japan. That looseness is precisely why the app is full of accounts that shouldn’t exist. Every dating app in the region trades one of those two things away for the other, and TanTan sits at the permissive end of it.
Premium Costs More Than the Part You Want
You can buy TanTan Premium to see who liked you, and as far as I remember there was a separate, cheaper package covering only those likes, which is the one I’d take. The published VIP pricing sits near $8.99 for a single month, around $16.99 for three and roughly $54.99 for twelve, which works out close to $4.58 a month across the year. Those are the figures the review sites currently list rather than a receipt I’m holding, and app store pricing moves constantly, so treat them as the shape of the deal instead of a quote. The app also sells coins in packs from about $4.99 up to around $79.99, which is the usual trick of turning one purchase decision into an open tab.
Boosts are a waste of either currency. They promote you to the entire world, so the likes come back from countries you’re never going to visit, which is the opposite of useful when the goal is meeting someone in the city you’re standing in. The free tier gives you around a hundred and twenty swipes a day and room for six photos, and that ceiling was never what stopped me getting dates here.
The Gift Card Ask Is the One to Learn
They will try to scam you, and the version that runs most often here is specific enough to describe from memory. A woman presenting as a single mother contacts you and pushes to meet immediately, keeping the conversation on sex and hookups so your attention stays somewhere other than the details. When you’re ready to meet, she says to bring condoms and an Apple gift card to keep her kids occupied while she’s out, then asks you to send the code first so she can set the children up with a game before leaving the house. Once you send that code she disappears.
The gift card is the tell, because those codes can’t be reversed once they’ve been read out to somebody, and any conversation that arrives at a payment before it arrives at a meeting has already told you what it was for. The public complaint threads about this app are full of the same shape wearing different props.
Filtering out unverified profiles and accounts carrying only one or two photos removes most of this before it starts, because a real profile costs time and the scammer’s entire model runs on volume instead. A reverse image search on any photo that looks too composed settles the rest in about ten seconds.
The Ones Who Charge Don’t Say So Up Front
She reaches out first, the chat stays friendly for a few messages, and then it emerges that she’s travelling alone, free right now, and that she charges. The photos are borrowed or generated outright, so even if you agree, the woman who turns up isn’t the woman in the pictures, and by then you’re the one holding a room key.
Nothing in the app stands in the way of this, and the easy signup is exactly why, because one working phone number is the entire barrier between a professional operation and your inbox. If that isn’t what you came for, the filter is the same one that catches the scams, which is a thin profile combined with a fast push to meet.
What the App Knows About You
TanTan collects considerably more than a dating app has any need for, and Mozilla’s privacy review of it is worth reading before deciding the risk is acceptable. Their write-up lists phone number, email address, photos, gender, linked WeChat and Alipay accounts and bank card numbers, then device model, IP address, GPS position, nearby Wi-Fi access points and sensor data, with camera and microphone access on top of all of it. They rated the app Super creepy and suggested swiping left on it entirely, which is a fairly rare verdict even in that series.
The location behaviour is the part I’d change on your phone tonight. The app asks for continuous position rather than position while you’re using it, and Mozilla’s own advice is to refuse the constant version and grant access only while the app is open, which both mobile operating systems allow from the permissions screen. The policy also carries broad exemptions covering national security and public interest, ordinary under Chinese data rules and better known in advance than discovered later. None of that stopped me using the app, but it did stop me linking a payment account to it.
Who You Meet Depends Entirely on the Country
The user base shifts so hard across the region that TanTan is effectively four different apps wearing one icon. The single constant is the ratio, since published breakdowns put the membership near sixty four per cent men against thirty six per cent women, with most accounts under twenty five, and that arithmetic explains every quiet inbox anyone has complained about.
In Japan, Japanese women don’t use TanTan. The women you find there are tourists and residents from Southeast Asia, mostly the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, and the upside is that most of them speak English comfortably. If Japanese women are specifically the goal, the app for that is Pairs, and the price of admission there is the residence card it demands.
In China, most women on TanTan don’t speak English, and the app gives you no help because there’s no chat translation built into it, which surprises people who assume a Chinese app would have solved that first. In practice you’re pasting into a translator and back for every message. The same language barrier rules apply here as everywhere else, which is to keep sentences short, translate openly instead of pretending you aren’t, and never let the chat turn into an exam.
In Hong Kong and Macau, a large share of the women on the app are Indonesian and Filipina domestic workers living in the homes of the families they work for. They usually get one day off a week, Sunday, and can’t stay away overnight, and that constraint decides the shape of anything that happens far more than either person does. Many are Muslim, and some are modern in outlook while having grown up inside a conservative society, so those limits are real rather than an opening position. If you’re counting encounters, this isn’t the group for it. Filipina women in the region are generally more open to foreigners, and what works there is being straightforward and generous with your time rather than clever with your messages.
What TanTan Is Actually Good For
TanTan earns its place as a wide, cheap net in cities where nothing else has meaningful coverage, and very little beyond that. Filter hard, skip the boosts, assume anyone pushing to meet within the hour is selling something, and keep your payment methods off the account. Run it that way and it produces the occasional real match plus a lot of practice at reading a profile quickly.
For local women across most of the region I still get better results from Bumble, where the profile side of things is a different discipline worth its own attention. What TanTan taught me that Bumble never did is how quickly a conversation goes sideways once the other person is working from a script.
